The Selection by Kiera Cass

Book Blurb: For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.
But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.
Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself—and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

My Review:  I will be the first to admit that it was the cover that drew me to the book.  I am a sucker for girls in ball gowns.   I listened to the book on audio as I sat and cross stitched.  I found myself being sucked into this futuristic world and I couldn't turn off my Ipod.  I just had to find out how the story ended...which it ended as a cliffhanger!  I am anxiously awaiting the release of the sequel.

Just a disclaimer, this is a teen novel so there are teenage angst. The story reminded me of the TV show the Bachelor where there are 35 girls trying to be queen and win the heart of Prince Maxon.  Of the girls you will find the nice one, the bitchy one and then there is America.  She is very outspoken and isn't afraid to tell the prince exactly what she thinks.

I thought the plot had sounded familiar, the CW has picked up a pilot based on this book. There's a good chance it could become a series in the fall. They describe it as The Bachelor meets The Hunger Games.
